Cancers of the breast patients, individuals at risk for osteoporosis, and people undergoing particular kinds of bone cancer therapies typically take drugs that contain bisphosphonates.
Bisphosphonates could place patients at risk for creating osteonecrosis of the jaws (a rotting of the jaw bones), according to a case report and literature review that appeared inside the May/June 2006 concern of Common Dentistry, the Academy of Common Dentistry's (AGD) clinical, peer-reviewed journal. Bisphosphonates are a family of drugs employed to avoid and treat osteoporosis, multiple myeloma, Paget's disease (bone cancers), and bone metastasis from other cancers. These drugs can bond to bone surfaces and prevent osteoclasts (cells that breakdown bone) from performing their job.
"Healthy bones constantly rebuild themselves," explains co-author of the report Sally-Jo Placa, DMD, MPA. "However, because the jawbones have rapid cell turnover, they can fail to heal properly in patients taking any of the bisphosphonate drugs. Patients need to be aware of the possibility of complications from dental surgery or extractions."
Because these drugs linger inside the bone indefinitely, they may possibly upset the cell balance in how the jaws regenerate and remove unhealthy bone.
In their report, the authors refer to the case of a woman who received bisphosphonate therapy intravenously to help remedy stage 4 cervical cancer. She then created osteonecrosis in her upper and lower jaws following tooth removal.
That's an fascinating find, but the genuine story is that contemporary dental work is really toxic to pregnant women and their fetuses. And it is not just the radiation from x-rays, either: dentists use a fantastic amount of toxic chemicals and substances in modern dental work, and quite a few such substances -- like mercury fillings -- are left in the patients' mouths for decades, where they slowly poison them. Dentists do not call them mercury fillings, of course: they use the safer-sounding "silver fillings" description, to hide the reality from patients that they're basically putting an incredibly potent nerve toxin into their mouths.
