A Green Lifestyle to Bequeath Our Children a Healthy Future

A Green Lifestyle to Bequeath Our Children a Healthy Future

by Theodore R Gibbs

We live in a world where pollution is damaging everything in nature, and we're seeing terrible effects like acid rain and global warming. It would be splendid if we could continue to exist on this amazing planet without destroying it in the process. For city-dwellers it may appear to be a tantalising mirage to think of drawing cool, clean air into their lungs, with no harmful poisons or toxins. We're already paying the price, though, for the toxins we keep creating; the environment and our physical well-being is being endangered by the air's toxicity.

We humans find it hard to avoid the fallout from the terrible impact that pollution, such as oil and chemical spills, is having on our oceans and all its inhabitants. For many people who had a living from the sea by fishing they no longer have a job as a consequence of pollution. Fishing has been the source for the food needs and the well-being of so many communities for so long, that it almost seems unimaginable that today we are observing its demise. A big example of how we are destroying the ocean is with oil spills, a recent example of this is the Deepwater Horizon spill which left many people out of work and cost billions of dollars to put right. The whole ecosystem was damaged from the large numbers of wildlife that perished, avian as well as marine, causing repercussions along the whole of the food chain. All of this just to obtain oil, a shameful example of humans putting themselves before other creatures and the planet.

As the earth's known oil reserves approach exhaustion, billions are pumped into exploration for new fields, money which could be used to increase and develop green energy production. The possibility of providing massive amounts of green energy is huge, without damaging the environment. One would think it's a no-brainer, given the possibilities offered by green energy alternatives, along with their being passive towards the environment. Take solar panels for instance, they will work effectively in sunlit locations and they can produce electricity as well as heat up water. Wind turbines are another way of using green energy as they simply have to have wind to make them create energy. The good side of wind turbines is they work 24/7, providing there is sufficient wind. We should understand that the time to implement an assertive green energy program is now, given the environmental damage caused by oil, and the limited supply thereof. If we did that, global warming and the other ruinous effects of pollution could actually be stopped, and just possibly reversed.

We will benefit in the short term and future generations will benefit in the long term. Instead of being at the mercy of intense weather patterns and harsh living conditions, our children, and their children, could live happily in a clean, beautiful, and bounteous environment. Beginning to live green, in addition to looking after the environment, could be the only way we can ensure this.

It will be worth all the money, time and huge effort necessary, if we can stop the relentless march of the harm we are doing to our planet.
