In a recent study assessing hospitals for patient safety ratings hospitals were scored out of a possible one hundred on their performance. Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust placed bottom of the rankings scoring an absolutely astonishing zero. The hospital was described as having a poor care environment with low patient privacy and very worryingly a breach of infection control standards.

Another of the UK's worst hospitals is the Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Trust in Lancashire. With death rates significantly higher than the average in the UK the hospital has received a lot of criticism. A recent study into hospital deaths linked to low-risk conditions, following surgery, in hospital and within 30 days of discharge revealed that the Lancashire hospital was higher than the national average by 12% for in hospital and 17% over for 30 days following treatment.

After the revelations of this study the two hospitals outlined that they would be looking into the quality of care and patient safety.

The problem with UK hospitals isn't just in one or two either as in a recent study the department of health found 36 hospitals in England were way above the national average for death rates. They also discovered that in the last 13 years a total of roughly 8,000 deaths were caused by medical negligence.
