It is not uncommon for patients to experience popping sounds during chiropractic adjustments.
Despite this, many newcomers to the world of adjustments find themselves needlessly worried over the meaning of the sounds produced during the adjustment. These sounds, referred to as "osseus", are the result of the popping of bubbles and release of gas in the fluid found in the joint of the cavity. The adjustments used in these treatments consist of moving the joint that is present in the joint cavity so as to obtain the appropriate alignment in the back.
Instead of allowing the popping noise to cause you distress, you should take the noise as a sign that the stiffness in your neck, joint, or back may soon be alleviated. When receiving an adjustment, relax because there is every reason to believe that the discomfort you have been experiencing will soon be alleviated. The popping sound that is heard during an alignment is caused by the process of cavitation which realigns the vertebrae and results in the dissolution of the fluid air bubbles and the release of gas. This method succeeds in decreasing the discomfort as well as the pressure in the joint so as to allow the fluid to revitalize the tissue, muscle, and joint.
These types of treatments are capable of curing far more than back pain in patients with alignment issues. Lack of proper alignment can cause pain in many other areas of the body including the knees, wrists, elbows, fingers, and knuckles. In order to prevent excessive friction during bone movement, the joints are covered with a slick material. The synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant, can sometimes develop air bubbles. The process of cavitation, which again consists of the movement of the joint back into proper alignment, can lead to a loud popping sound which indicates that the joint is now aligned leading to increased mobility and pain relief.
Keep in mind that, although popping or cracking noises might occur, not all adjustments to the spine or neck will produce these sounds. A successful realignment does not require that the synovial fluid make an audible sound. This only indicates that fewer air bubbles are present in the fluid. Even if a popping does not occur, the chiropractic realignment will increase fluid flow in the joint and will revitalize both your joint as well as the surrounding tissues and muscles in your joints, neck, and back. The goal of the treatment is to apply direct yet gentle pressure to the troubled area. Spinal adjustments will work to realign your joints and vertebrae so as to provide pain relief and increased mobility, regardless of whether an audible noise is heard. Improve your quality of life and live pain free from this day forward.
